The NIA Divisions of Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology (DGCG), Aging Biology (DAB) and Neuroscience (DN) will be convening a one-day workshop, “Integrative omics approaches to discover influential mechanistic pathway(s)/molecules associated with LAVs for healthy aging,” on August 28th, 2017 in Bethesda, MD.

About the workshop:

To date, longevity associated variants (LAV) such as FOXO3A and APOE2 have been well replicated in multiple population cohorts and pursued as translatable therapeutic targets to enhance cardiovascular health, healthy aging and life span. However, translation of LAVs remains a major challenge in this era of translational genomics. The slow progress is attributed to the lack of fundamental/functional information on genotype-phenotype relationships, lack of knowledge on the causality and mechanistic action of the gene(s) that provide the protective effects, pleiotropic effects and structural variations associated with these protective gene variants.

The advancement in technologies in the recent years has enabled collection of large OMICS data sets in several population cohorts that include centenarians and aged individuals and these data sets could serve as a valuable trove of information for identifying and validating potential therapeutic targets, elucidation of mechanistic pathways associated with healthy aging processes and targeted therapies to modulate favorable mechanistic pathways to delay or prevent age associated diseases. Integrative systems biological approaches could offer new insights into the mechanisms underlying protective effects of variants that protect against susceptibility to multiple diseases, as observed among exceptionally long lived individuals after a life-long exposure to developmental and environmental / lifestyle experiences.

The major objective of the workshop is to brain storm with a group of experts on Bioinformatics, Translational Genomics, Comparative Biology, Epidemiologists in 4 different sessions (Integrative Omics tools, Population studies, Comparative Biology and Success Stories and challenges) to address the following questions:

  1. What are some promising approaches for overcoming current bioinformatics challenges in the identification of putative mechanistic/causal pathways that provide protection against age related diseases?
  2. How can Genetics, Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Connectomes be bridged to identify longevity associated cellular signatures, targets and therapeutics?
  3. What types of collaborations between private-public organizations and resources (data/bio-specimens) are needed to address the above?
  4. What are the successes and current challenges with the integrative omics approaches for translation?
